ASPECTS OF GOD'S WORKS IN SOTERIOLOGY (FIRST PART)
1. Call (Calling)
a. Definition of Vocation
In Greek the word “call” is κλῆσις (klesis) which means call, invitation, invitation to fellowship with God (Rom. 11:29; Eph. 4: 4; Phil. 3:14; 2Tim. 1: 9; Heb. 3: 1).
b. The way God calls man (reveals Himself)
i. In the Old Testament
- Come to sinful humans (Gen.3: 9)
- Appeared to Abraham (Gen 12: 1, 7, cf. Gen. 18)
- Appeared Himself to Moses in flames of fire (Ex. 3: 2)
- Appeared to the Israelites in a pillar of fire and pillar of cloud (Ex. 13:21).
- Allah calls His people through His servants or prophets (Hebrews 1: 1).
ii. In the New Testament
God the Father sent His Son Jesus Christ to call men to fellowship with Him (Hebrews 1: 2; John 1: 1, 14; 3:16)
Through His Word which is written in the Bible (the books of Genesis to Revelation)
Through the message of God's Word from God's servants (Eph. 4:11).
c. News / Contents of God's call
- The call to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior belongs to Christ (Rom. 1: 6; 1 Cor 7:22)
- Call to repent and return to God (Isa. 31: 6; Hos. 14: 2; Matt. 3: 2; 4:17; Acts 2:38)
- Call to be saints (1 Cor 1: 2)
- The call to freedom (Gal. 3:15)
- The heavenly calling that is eternal life (Phil. 3:14; Hebrews 3: 1)
d. Purpose of God's Call
- We are called to fellowship with Christ (1 Cor 1: 9)
- We are called to follow Christ and His example (1Pet 2:21)
- We are called to holy life (1 Thess 4: 7)
- We are called to the kingdom and glory of God (1Th 2:12)
- We are called to receive heavenly gifts in Christ (Phil 3:14)
- We are called to eternal life (1Tim. 6:12)
