THE LETTER OF CORINTHIANS
THE LETTER OF CORINTHIANS
The
interesting and new things I got from reading the book Introduction to the New
Testament by Donald Guthrie were:
The
Corinthian church could not be an example to those around them until these two
Corinthian letters are very valuable and describe a problem that saddened the
apostle Paul (p.28). The reason why this choice is interesting is that before I
read this book and heard the explanation from the lecturer in the last class, I
never knew that Corinth was a church that had extraordinary problems cf. pp. 34
1 Corinthians), covering status, crime in various aspects, strife, seeking
justice for unbelievers and immorality (adultery, relationship between child
and stepmother, etc.). When I imagined to be the apostle Paul when I heard the
news about the church in Corinth, how much treatment and rebuke was needed for
the church there, and Paul could only give a letter maybe because he was in the
ministry or in prison.
Paul's opponent in Corinth (pp. 28-31) became
an interesting thing for me, it turned out that behind Paul's purpose of
sending this letter to rebuke the congregation there, it turned out that Paul
wanted to help the congregation in knowing the true gospel and the concept of
eschatology and the teachers or false prophets who taught about the false
gospel.
With the
visit of mourning and letters of distress (pp. 35-48), almost all of the
reading of this book is new to me, it turns out that Paul wrote this letter to
Corinth which has a lot of complexity and much is still being discussed about
the “lost letter”, “the visit that was lost.” third time or never or just a
desire”, “chapters of chapters 1-9 and 10-13 in 2 Corinthians”, while reading
this letter as normal and without problems, it becomes an interest to study the
Bible more and more. This unique feature, besides its content is the Word of
God that is relevant to us today, it is also important to explore and learn
from previous theologians regarding this letter of Paul. However, even though
it appears that this Bible has problems, especially Paul's letter to the
Corinthians, it does not reduce our faith to believe in God, but to make us
more confident that God's involvement from the past until now in all problems
is real.
And what
is new and interesting from this reading is the dating of this letter, by
referring to Paul's writings in his letter makes theologians interpret and
reconstruct their arguments regarding the time gap between the writing of the
letters of 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians, even the author of this book does
not conclude when exactly the letter -this letter was written, so it is
necessary to find out by reading more books about this letter to Corinth to
conclude when this letter was written.
Conclusion
Each
lesson or course if studied more deeply will automatically add to one's
insight, because there are so many new and interesting things when studying the
Bible with references or references from various aspects, both from the
environment (school/campus, discussions) and from the liturgy. (internet,
books, etc.) without neglecting the power of the Holy Spirit who enlightens
every individual to be able to understand the contents of the Bible itself.
Because the Bible is an open book that accepts various inputs or references to
be able to understand the contents of the Bible, without putting aside the
absolute truth of the Bible as the Word of God that is without error, but it is
not wrong if you want to seek and dig deeper by looking at experience and
knowledge. others.
THANK YOU, LORD JESUS BLESS
